Pedodontics, that is, pediatric dentistry, is the science that protects the teeth of children between the ages of 0 and 13, and eliminates the problems caused by caries, trauma or hereditary and similar factors.
What are the pedodontic treatment methods?
Pedodontic treatment methods include preventive applications, dental care training, tooth cleaning, placeholders, covering applications, fluoride applications, child-specific treatment methods, caries and fracture treatments, treatments for tooth displacement or eruption, and tooth extraction treatments.
When should the first dental examination be?
After the first tooth eruption, children should be taken to the dentist. Thereafter, controls should be provided in a six-month period. Clinical examination of children is carried out in two stages. The first step is an extraoral examination. In the head-face examination, size, shape and proportions are observed in this region. In the second step, an intraoral examination is performed. While the mouth is open, the teeth and soft tissues are examined and the situation when the teeth are closed is observed.
When should the first tooth brushing be done in children?
Oral care should start from the moment the teeth first appear in the mouth. It is recommended to clean the teeth by wetting a clean cloth in the morning and evening. The use of toothbrush should be started with the eruption of the posterior milk molars of the child.
What precautions can be taken for tooth decay in children?
There are some measures to reduce the formation of caries and increase the resistance of teeth against caries. The first of these methods is the process of covering the teeth called “fissure sealant”. In general, dental caries starts in the grooves called fissures on the chewing surface of the teeth. With the aforementioned material, the grooves are covered and the penetration of bacteria or food residues into that area is prevented. In this way, the formation of caries is also prevented. This method is applied to milk and permanent teeth. Another method that prevents caries is to increase the resistance of teeth against caries. This is done with a topical fluoride application. Fluoride strengthens the teeth and increases the resistance of the teeth against caries.
How are Flourid applications made?
Fluoride is an element that strengthens the tooth structure and prevents tooth decay. Fluoride in toothpastes is also found in various foods. Children often do not get enough fluoride because they neglect to brush their teeth. For this reason, “superficial flourid” applications are made. In the superficial flourid method, which is applied to children whose teeth are prone to decay, the tooth structure is strengthened by storing the flourid on the teeth. In this way, resistance against caries is provided.
How are fissure sealant (dental graft) applications made?
The indented areas on the chewing surface of the teeth are called pits and fissures. Because these areas are narrow and cannot be cleaned adequately, these parts are the beginning of caries. In the fissure sealing method, this area is cleaned and a fluid filling called fissure filling is applied.
Why should a Pedodontist be consulted for children?
Treatment methods applied to children are different from adults. Since pedodontists know the oral and dental system of children well, these physicians should be consulted. Pedodontists advance professionally not only in treatment, but also in the process of preparing the child for treatment during examination and treatment.
