Frequently Asked Questions
You should consult your dentist. Some people, knowingly or unknowingly, use too much force while brushing their teeth. This may cause periodontitis. People with periodontitis shouldn’t use a toothbrush with hard bristles. Since hard bristled toothbrushes can cause more deformation in gums, these people are advised to use soft bristled toothbrushes.
Some people have small mouths. When these people use a brush with heads too large they might have a hard time reaching the back of their mouth. This will cause problems in dental hygiene. People with small mouths should pick brushes with small or medium heads. Spinning headed brushes can also be used. Spinning headed brushes have small heads. It makes it easier to reach the teeth at the back compared to manual toothbrushes.
There are many kinds of toothpastes. They all have different features. Some are whitening, cavity preventing, gum protecting etc. You should pick your toothpaste based on what you’re having a problem with. If you are having cavities you should pick a toothpaste with a surface protecting effect like fluorid. If you are having sensitivity issues, you should use a toothpaste that decreases sensitivity. If you have a problem with teeth color, you should pick one that has whitening effects.
Missing teeth can mess with the integrity of your oral tissue. Missing teeth causes that part of your mouth to not function fully. Teeth that are near the part with the missing teeth bend left and right over time. This breaks the integrity of the system. Missing teeth creates gaps between teeth. Food residue can pile up in these gaps and cause decay and gum problems. Missing teeth should be treated immediately as it’s a missing part of your body.
Anesthesia is required in the relevant region for tooth extraction. Inflammation makes it harder for anesthetics to spread in the tissue. This can cause a lack of complete anesthesia. In addition, after tooth extraction, veins are exposed to the mouth and they interact with saliva. In such cases, inflammation can interact with blood and spread to the whole body.
Another reason that may require the use of antibiotics before and after tooth extraction is the state of the patient and the medicine they already use. The most dangerous complication that can occur after a dental operation is infective endocarditis. Endocarditis is inflammation of the inner lining of your heart’s chambers and valves. It is life threatening. If treated in time, a first time endocarditis has a 100% chance of healing. But there is a risk of death if it’s not treated in time. Even in this age where antimicrobial treatments are advanced, occurence of this infection is serious.
With all this taken into account, it is better to postpone tooth extraction in the case of an inflammation. To prevent spread and to remove the risk of infective endocarditis a prescription is required. We can’t say that everyone with an inflammation will face these complications. However it’s important to detect the patients who have a higher chance of facing these complications and take precaution. High risk patients are patients with prosthetic heart valves and children with heart diseases. These patients need to use antibiotics before a bleeding dental procedure regardless of inflammation.
Wisdom teeth and symptoms and physical situations they create, change depending on the person. Therefore the requirement of extraction depends on the tooth’s position and the symptoms it causes.
